Trae Young's electrifying return has Hawks fans buzzing, but there's a glaring issue: their defense! After a 21-game absence due to a knee injury, the Atlanta Hawks' star point guard, Trae Young, is back in action and looking phenomenal. He's quickly regaining his All-Star form, as evidenced by his impressive 35-point performance.
However, while Young's return is undoubtedly a boost for the Hawks' offense, the team faces a significant challenge: their struggling defense. In a high-scoring showdown against the Chicago Bulls, the Hawks conceded a staggering 152 points, highlighting their defensive woes.
The Bulls showcased an offensive clinic, with nine players scoring in double figures, led by Matas Buzelis with 28 points. They also set season highs in several key areas, including 41 assists, a 57.6% field goal percentage, and a 47.6% 3-point shooting percentage (20 of 42).
Despite Young's stellar performance and contributions from Jalen Johnson (36 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 assists), Onyeka Okongwu (23 points), and Vit Krejci (20 points), the Hawks couldn't contain the Bulls' offensive onslaught. The Bulls' 83-point first half set the tone for the game, exposing the Hawks' defensive vulnerabilities.
“It’s kind of tough winning games when you give up 80 points in the first half,” Johnson admitted. “It’s kind of embarrassing in a sense. …. Hopefully we cut down on some of the things we’re doing.”
The Hawks have now suffered three consecutive losses and have fallen to a 15-15 record.
Young, who played only 26 minutes in the game, expressed his satisfaction with his recovery, stating, “I feel amazing.” Coach Quin Snyder is cautiously managing Young's return, suggesting he may need more time before playing back-to-back games.
Young's impact is undeniable. He led the NBA in assists last season and is a four-time All-Star. Although he scored only 8 points in his first game back, he quickly regained his scoring touch against the Bulls.
Coach Snyder acknowledged defensive breakdowns, particularly in the first half. While the Hawks improved in the second half, they still allowed the Bulls to score 69 points and shoot 54.3% from the field.
Young recognized the fast-paced nature of the game, stating, “It’s how both teams play. Both teams play fast. Teams are coming in here and playing fast against us. We’ve got to figure out how to stop a team that can only play fast.”
