England were 59-0 in the opening session, 24 overs, at a scoring rate of 2.45 with only 22% attacking shots.

Among the 135 sessions England has faced since Brendon McCullum took charge in June 2022, this was their second-slowest session for scoring rate and the second-lowest for attacking shots.

Gus Atkinson does have a Test hundred to his name, so he can settle in for a while when he comes in to bat.

I think even the most loyal Bazball followers would admit there was some merit in the discussion, Patrick.

So we can do this... Those has-beens had a point after all!

Patrick, Canada.

Still optimistic — perhaps the lead is enough for victory.

Just woke up and England are still batting; the game isn’t over yet. What’s happening?

Of the 27 instances where Ben Stokes faced as many balls in a Test innings (112 balls), only on two occasions have there been fewer runs scored in the first 112 balls of these 27 innings: 31 vs Australia at Leeds (2019, 4th innings) and 33 vs NZ at Wellington (2023).

Australia’s closest wicket moment in an otherwise steady session came when Scott Boland induced extra bounce, but Cameron Green’s leap wasn’t quite high enough.

Impressed by how Will Jacks and Ben Stokes have applied themselves in the day’s opening session. Under the lights yesterday, England lost six wickets and nearly handed Australia this second Ashes Test. When Stokes is at the crease, anything can happen, and they’ve held firm today.

Elizabeth, thanks. It’s amusing how the live text commentary sometimes gets blamed for England’s woes. Either way, wicketless session for the first time in the series? Impressive.

The last time I handed over to Timothy Abraham at the mid-day break on Day Three, England were 45-0 after six overs... and then everything changed.

England hasn’t lost a wicket on my watch on Day Four... no pressure, Tim!

Stokes is cobbling through, saving face, but the Ashes still hangs in the balance four days ago, not now.

Stokes 36 (112), Jacks 25 (66)

This is turning into a curious twist, with Labuschagne-esque sorts of play to steer us to the break.

Will Jacks adds three to his tally before Stokes blocks the final three deliveries of the session.

England reach lunch without losing another wicket!

How do you like your eggs in the morning? A craving for Ashes updates.

Apologies for the cheesy analogy, but there’s encouraging news from England as Day Four of the Brisbane Test unfolds.

England began the day at 134-6, trailing by 43, and looked set for a potential innings defeat. Yet Stokes and Jacks have shown grit, grinding out valuable runs.

Stokes and Jacks have batted with patience, rotating strikes and punishing bad deliveries. Overall, it’s sensible cricket.

Australia’s bowlers have occasionally found edges, and a few balls have bumbled off the pitch.

The sharpest moment for Australia came when a delivery from Scott Boland rose steeply and nearly took the edge before Cameron Green leapt, just a fraction late.

Stokes remains undefeated on 36, Jacks on 22 not out as England reach 190-6 after 58 overs — a lead of 13 runs.

No matter what happens next, England has shown resilience, and Australia will have to bat again.

Travis Head is a crowd favorite, especially after that first Test. He does tend to push his overs along.

Batting sensibly now might not be enough... the game feels beyond reach for England.

England move into the final ten minutes of the morning session.

Three singles and a wide push England’s lead into double figures.

England’s 50+ partnership between Ben Stokes and Will Jacks is the slowest 50+ stand in terms of scoring rate during the Bazball era, at 2.26 runs per over.

WinViz has shifted from 6% to 13% in favor of England during this partnership.

Stokes was squared up, and if anyone could have taken the catch, Cameron Green might have, but it just slipped through.

  1. Eng 185-6 published at 56 overs

Lead by eight runs

A bit of luck for Stokes as the ball flicks the edge and climbs over Green at gully. Stokes hits four; Boland reacts with a roar.

Six off the over.
