A storm of controversy has brewed over the new canteen model at Hwa Chong Institution, but the school is taking steps to address the issues and improve the dining experience for students and staff.
The Bento Box Debate
Last week, photos of pre-packed bento meals provided by SATS, a food caterer, went viral on social media, sparking a heated debate about the quality and nutritional value of the food. Students and online commentators expressed concerns, questioning whether the meals met adequate standards.
However, a week later, student representatives have reported noticeable improvements to the bento meals. They highlighted enhancements in portion sizes, taste, and freshness, indicating a positive step towards making SATS meals more appealing.
Addressing Student Feedback
Hwa Chong Institution is actively working with SATS to revise recipes and presentation based on student feedback. Principal Lee Peck Ping announced that the school will introduce pre-ordering options at live stalls from the next semester and is even establishing an on-campus kitchen to produce bento meals.
"We want to collaborate and refine our canteen to address earlier issues," Mr. Lee explained, adding that the school is "refining the menu" to meet student needs.
Long Lines and Limited Options
The school's hybrid canteen model aims to tackle long-standing operational challenges, such as persistent queues and the declining sustainability of the traditional stall-only model. Teacher Chan Hwee Sing, who previously had limited meal choices due to the single Halal live stall, praised the bento boxes as a welcome option, offering variety and the convenience of pre-ordering.
Engaging the Community
Hwa Chong Institution has engaged over 2,600 students through dialogues and food tastings since 2024. The school is forming a canteen review committee comprising staff, students, parents, and a SATS representative to ensure a collaborative approach to improvements.
Principal Mr. Lee encourages parents and students to share their views and make suggestions, saying, "Together, we want to make this work."

While the school has addressed the meal quality concerns, rumors circulated about disciplinary actions and demerit points. A teacher's message warning students not to participate in the canteen food controversy sparked speculation. Hwa Chong clarified that the message was sent "out of concern" for students' well-being and that no students were punished for speaking to the media.
The school also addressed rumors about students' inability to access their discipline records, stating that the discipline module was temporarily taken down in October 2025 as part of an ongoing review to make the demerit system more developmental.

Despite the initial controversy, Hwa Chong Institution's proactive approach to addressing student feedback and operational challenges demonstrates a commitment to enhancing the dining experience. With the establishment of an on-campus kitchen and the formation of a canteen review committee, the school is taking tangible steps towards improvement.
