Feeling the pinch of dwindling populations? Greece is taking action! The country is broadening its relocation incentive program, adding six more regional units to the mix, as announced by Social Cohesion and Family Minister Domna Michailidou.
This bold move is designed to combat the rapid population decline plaguing many rural areas. The program will now encompass the regions of Drama, Kilkis, Serres, Florina, Pella, and Kastoria.
Minister Michailidou explained on Skai TV that the primary goal is to invigorate remote border areas. The initiative encourages people to return to their roots, utilize existing property, or move to communities offering a better quality of life.
And here's a key detail: a generous relocation grant of €10,000 is available to all eligible applicants, irrespective of their income. The support for local communities is also linked to staffing essential public services and new employment measures, in collaboration with the Public Employment Service (DYPA).
But here's where it gets interesting... Michailidou also revealed plans to further expand the program to other regions, including both islands and mainland areas, where demographic pressures are particularly significant. Could this be a sign of more widespread challenges?
