A Grinch-like Price Hike: The Story of Vernon's Gas Station Prices
Imagine waking up on New Year's Eve, ready to start the year with a fresh perspective, only to be greeted by a not-so-friendly surprise at the gas pump. That's exactly what happened in Vernon, where gas prices took an unexpected turn, leaving many motorists feeling a little less cheerful.
But here's where it gets controversial: while the Grinch waited until after Christmas to spoil the festive spirit, the gas stations in Vernon decided to ring in the new year with an 11-cent-per-liter increase. And this is the part most people miss - the timing couldn't have been worse, with the price hike effectively ending 2025 on a sour note.
For a brief moment, drivers enjoyed a respite, with gas prices dipping to a 'mere' 120.9 cents per liter - a welcome sight after a long period of high prices. But, like a burst bubble, the illusion of affordable fuel was short-lived.
On New Year's Eve, motorists were met with a rude awakening as prices skyrocketed to 131.9 cents per liter. According to gasbuddy.com, the Super Save station on 27th Street offered a glimmer of hope with a price of 118.9 cents per liter, but most stations had already hiked their prices by more than a dime.
The situation was no better in nearby Salmon Arm, where, for the first time in a while, gas prices surpassed the $1-per-liter mark, with several stations charging 99.9 cents per liter. However, at least two stations in Vernon decided to go even higher, pricing their gas at 131.9 cents per liter.
Kelowna and Penticton followed suit, with most stations matching the 131.9-cent-per-liter mark. Kamloops drivers, unfortunately, faced the highest prices in the region, ranging from 132.9 to 136.9 cents per liter. Vancouver area residents were paying a whopping 144.9 cents per liter, while Calgary drivers enjoyed a relative bargain at 118.9 cents per liter.
So, what do you think? Is this just the cost of doing business, or do you feel like the timing of this price hike was a deliberate attempt to catch drivers off guard? Share your thoughts in the comments and let's discuss!
