Heavy Rain Pounds Mackay and Surrounds
Our reporter, Lottie Twyford, brings us a firsthand account from Dave in Cameron's Pocket, located inland from Mackay. Dave shares his experience of losing power multiple times but remains optimistic, stating, "It's stood up seven times, so it's all good."
He describes the weather's transformation, with gentle rain giving way to powerful winds around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. His rain gauge has recorded an impressive 175mm since the last reading, setting a new record for the area.
The Worst of the Rain: A Look at the Numbers
According to the BOM, some areas have experienced exceptionally heavy rainfall this morning. Here are the notable figures:
- Mattie O'Neil Bridge (inland from Mackay): 146mm between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m.

Wind Damage and Power Outages: Mackay's Battle
Mackay has borne the brunt of Koji's wrath, with wind gusts reaching up to 50 km/h on Sunday morning. Our reporter, Liam O'Connell, provides a ground report, describing the damage to warning signs along the coastline.
A major flood warning has been issued for the Pioneer River at Mirani, with moderate flooding expected in the community located 36 km west of Mackay. As of 11 a.m., over 6,000 homes across the Mackay region have lost power, including areas like Slade Point, Richmond, Eungella, and Devereux Creek.
Cyclone Koji's Demise: A Tropical Low
Claudia Williams reports that the BOM has officially downgraded Cyclone Koji to a tropical low. The system, which made landfall between Ayr and Bowen earlier today, has weakened below the tropical cyclone threshold.
While heavy rainfall persists between Ayr and Mackay, the BOM forecasts further weakening as Koji moves inland.
