End of Derby's Five Lamps Roadworks: What You Need to Know! (2026)

A major four-month roadworks project at Derby’s Five Lamps junction is nearing completion this week. Since September, crews have been upgrading traffic signals, installing new railings, and resurfacing Five Lamps, the stretch linking Kedleston Road and Duffield Road to the city centre.

Derby City Council’s cabinet member for transport, Councillor Carmel Swan, told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that the works, expected to wrap up on Thursday, have been delivered within budget and are on track to finish before Christmas. She also apologized for the disruption and disturbances caused to residents, particularly due to overnight resurfacing work.

The council stated the aim of the project is to deliver faster and more reliable journeys. They noted that the previous traffic signals at Five Lamps had not been upgraded for around two decades.

Swan added that once the new smart signal system is in place, it will improve traffic flow and bus efficiency, shorten journey times, and reduce energy use and carbon emissions. In addition, the scheme will see the refurbishment of the cherished Victorian railings along Duffield Road as part of the broader improvements.
