Discord's Age Verification Plan Sparks User Backlash and Delays!
Discord's controversial decision: In a surprising move, Discord has postponed its age verification plans, bowing to the intense backlash from its users. The platform, with its massive 200 million monthly users, aimed to verify the age of every user, but the users had other plans.
The initial plan: Originally, Discord intended to roll out global age verification measures by placing users into a version designed for under-16s until their age was confirmed. This strategy was an attempt to align with emerging regulations in countries like the UK, Australia, the EU, and Brazil, as well as individual US states, regarding social media access for minors.
User outcry: But here's where it gets controversial. Discord users, many of whom were attracted to the platform for its private discussion spaces, were not pleased. One user, Alastair (Eret), who manages a server with over 60,000 members, bluntly stated, "I do not trust them." The platform's recent security issues, including a potential leak of 70,000 users' ID photos and exposed files from a UK-based verification partner, further fueled this distrust.
Discord's response: Discord's co-founder and CTO, Stanislav Vishnevskiy, acknowledged the controversy, admitting they should have provided more details about the process. He attributed the mistrust to the tech industry's broader surveillance concerns. The company now plans to offer more verification options, like credit card verification, instead of facial or ID scans.
Age determination system: Interestingly, Discord already has an internal age determination system that considers account age, payment methods, server types, and activity patterns. Vishnevskiy assured users that this system doesn't analyze messages or content for age verification. To address user concerns, Discord will publish its age determination methodology before the global rollout.
The delay: The age verification process is now scheduled for the latter half of the year, with less than 10% of users expected to verify their age. These users won't be able to access age-restricted content until verified.
