Conor Benn's Stinging Call for Chris Eubank Jr.'s Retirement: A Fight Night Saga
In a bold statement that has sent shockwaves through the boxing world, Conor Benn has called for Chris Eubank Jr.'s retirement, citing health concerns and the best interests of the former's young family. This comes after Benn's one-sided win in November, following a Fight of the Year contender in April. But here's where it gets controversial...
Eubank Jr., who has alluded to health issues, has pledged to fight on, but Benn believes it's time for his rival to hang up his gloves. Speaking to Matchroom's YouTube channel, Benn said, 'I think he should sail off into the sunset. It's always hard to do that with a loss, but I think he should call it a day. He's got twin boys, and sometimes you need to prioritize your health and safety over everything else.'
Eubank, now 36, has a 35-4 record with 23 KOs. Benn, who hasn't spoken to Eubank since the fight, questioned his future at super middleweight, saying, 'I'll be expecting a phone call once he realizes 168 is not for him. Who's he going to fight at 168?'
Despite not having a fight date, Benn has stayed active, running and training. He took more pride in the first fight with Eubank, feeling he let himself down in the rematch. 'If I'd lost the second fight, I'd have to say he's a better boxer than me,' Benn said. 'But I know he ain't.'
Looking ahead, Benn is intrigued by the possibility of Teofimo Lopez upending Shakur Stevenson in New York and is prepared to wait for Ryan Garcia's WBC welterweight title fight in February before making another move. 'He could get cooked,' Benn said, mentioning Rolly Romero as a potential interim opponent. 'If he gets the WBC title, that fight is huge. I'd be willing to hold out to June or July.'
Benn's ultimate goal is clear: to win the WBC belt. 'I feel like me and the WBC is written in the stars,' he said. But will Eubank Jr. heed Benn's call? The boxing world awaits with bated breath, eager to see if this saga will continue or if Eubank Jr. will indeed hang up his gloves.
