Casio's Timeless $40 Watch: A Dirt-Cheap Charmer, Still Going Strong 37 Years Later
New colorways of this Casio classic keep the decades-old design from going stale.
For millions of fans, Casio means simple, affordable reliability. It owes that reputation to watches like the A158, a practical timepiece that has punched above its price tag since 1989. With a metal band elevating the no-nonsense digital display, it's no wonder this design has become a fan favorite.
And new variants like the A158WEA-2 and A158WEA-7 keep the classic look fresh. Joining the lineup this month, these watches feature blue and gray frames that elegantly complement their silver-colored resin case. Each model measures 36.8mm x 33.2mm, with a thickness of 8.5mm.
Like all A158 digital watches, these models toggle between 12- and 24-hour formats. They also include a stopwatch, daily alarm, full automatic calendar, and a green LED backlight, preserving the retro charm. Water resistance of around 30 meters adds to their everyday utility, which is expected from a brand known for its simple, reliable, and affordable watches.
Expected to hit the US market soon, the A158WEA-2 and A158WEA-7 are already available in Japan, where they cost 6,050 Japanese yen (approximately $38).
In other Casio news, G-Shock recently gave its GXW GX-56 Series watch a stealthy black-on-black makeover.
