California's space race is heating up! A new startup, Vast, is set to make history by sending astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2027. But here's where it gets exciting: Vast isn't just aiming for the ISS; they're eyeing the long-term goal of establishing a private space station in low Earth orbit (LEO).
NASA has chosen Vast for the sixth private astronaut mission to the ISS, marking a significant step towards unlocking the potential of the orbital economy. This mission, set to launch in the summer of 2027, will follow in the footsteps of Axiom Space, which has already conducted four successful private astronaut missions to the ISS. But Vast has a unique vision: they see these missions as a stepping stone to building their own private space station.
"Leveraging the remaining life of the space station with science and research-led commercial crewed missions is a critical part of the transition to commercial space stations and fully unlocking the orbital economy," said Vast CEO Max Haot. This ambitious plan involves launching a pathfinder station called Haven-1 in 2027, followed by the construction of a multi-module Haven-2 over the next few years. Haven Demo, a 1,100-pound (500-kilogram) pathfinder spacecraft launched by Vast in November, is already paving the way for these ambitious plans.
Vast isn't alone in its vision. Other companies, like Blue Origin and Sierra Space, are also working on their own LEO space stations. The Orbital Reef and Starlab projects, funded by NASA, are prime examples of the growing interest in commercial space outposts. But if these private stations succeed, what happens to the ISS? When it crashes back to Earth in 2030, the only LEO outpost left might be Tiangong, the three-module station built by China.
